BSCW Project Help Files: Modifying a URL

The Modify option seen beneath all URLs allows a user to change the label of the URL, to provide additional information about the URL and to modify the URL itself in case you made an error adding the address or if the address changes.

In order to use the Modify option you must left click on the Modify hot link beneath the particular object you wish to modify.

This is an example of a URL with a modify link beneath it:

Modify allows you to do three things in the context of a URL. When you click on modify you will see three options:

	Change the name of the url.
	Add information to the display directly beneath the URL to describe the folder itself or the activity to take place within the folder.
	Edit the actual URL. This allows you to correct the URL in case the link is broken (or never works correctly in the first place!)

Note that you cannot perform these three functions simultaneously. If you wish to both change the name of the URL and add a description of the URL you must perform one function, click on the appropriate button, click on modify again and perform the second function.

To rename the URL you simply click in the box, remove the former name, insert a new name for the URL and click on the Rename button. This is what the interface looks like:

The second function allows you to describe the URL. Simply click on the "Edit Desc." button or scroll down the page (all three functions are on a single page). Enter the description into the Description box and click on the Save new description button. You can also redescribe a folder by removing the former text and inserting new text. The interface looks like this after you have inserted the text (the first time you are presented with this box it is empty):



After the system processes your request the URL will now look something like this:



The third function allows you to change the actual URL for your link. Simply click on the "Edit URL" botton or scroll down the page (all three functions are on a single page). Modify the URL in the "New URL:" box and then click on the "Change URL" button. It is always a good idea to check the URL after you add it to be sure it is working! The interface looks like this:



Your instructor can set privileges for each object so it may be the case that you will be unable to create a url or modify it in certain folders. If you have any questions please see your instructor!
