The BSCW Project

The BSCW Project is designed to make it easier for members of a class to work together… to ask questions, to find and share information, and to submit computer-generated assignments.

BSCW (which stands for Basic Support for Collaborative Work) allows registered class members to access material for this course using any internet-connected computer…

·        from your room,

·        from a lab,

·        …anywhere you can reach the Internet.

Because BSCW is a secure password protected workspace, access is limited to the members of the class.  No one can view or access materials in our workspace unless he/she is invited.  The site is NOT open to general internet viewers so your information is secure among the participants in the class.

BSCW allows you to

·        access documents,

·        participate in discussions, submit papers (such as quizzes, assignments, etc.),

·        transfer files like

o       Word documents,

o       Excel spreadsheets,

o       PowerPoint presentations,

o       and other graphics.

BSCW will keep track of the activities performed on the workspace and notify the participants about these activities on a daily basis.  It does this by sending an e-mail message, so each participant knows there is something new to be viewed.

To take advantage of this feature, you must have an e-mail account and for  courses in Sociology and Anthropology, it must be an account provided by the University’s computer center, and use it on a daily basis.

[NOTE: because of the unreliability of other e-mail providers, I require the use of a Creighton account for this course.  The Computer Center Help Desk has provided an easy-to-use web-based utility to create and manage an account.  Go to the Account Management Interface (AMI) and follow the directions.]

I will use BSCW as the primary vehicle for organizing our work, and for distributing information.  I will post study-guides and other information on a regular basis.  I will monitor the discussions and try to answer all questions in a timely fashion.  We will also use BSCW to submit all of your assignments, to ask questions and engage in discussions, to share files and documents, to highlight relevant web sites, and to participate in group projects.

In order to  enter the  BSCW and have ready access to help files, point your browser to:

Click on the Egyptian door.  BSCW will respond with a User-Name / Password dialog box like the following:

You simply enter your User Name and password into the appropriate spaces in the dialog box and press enter.  BSCW will then open a window that contains a path to all of the workspaces you are authorized to enter.  Both the user name and password are case sensitive.  Your user name is your last name with an initial capital letter and then your first and middle initial in upper case as in  Jane Mary Smith =  SmithJM

[NOTE: If you are working from a public computer (such as one of the computers in the Social Science Data Lab) you should NEVER check the box that asks “Save this password in your password list”.  If you check that box while using a public machine, it will give others who use the machine after you do ACCESS TO YOUR ACCOUNT.]
